Is Axum safe? 🇪🇹

Do not travel to Axum. The UK Foreign Office (as of May 2026) explicitly advises against all travel to the Tigray region, and Canada's official position is to avoid non-essential travel to Ethiopia with regional cautions. This is not a conventional safety issue—the risk is armed conflict and military instability, not street crime.

Axum's recent history defines the risk. In February 2021, Amnesty International documented that Eritrean troops massacred hundreds of civilians in the city; RFI reported at least 240 deaths. While that massacre occurred in 2021, the most recent reporting from January 2026 (Ethiopia Insight) describes "The Invasion of Axum," confirming that military tensions have persisted and escalated. The situation has not stabilized. By August 2025, The Reporter Ethiopia observed that visitors to the north have essentially vanished, noting how "History Endures But Visitors Vanish"—a direct signal that tourism to Axum has ceased entirely and the city is defined by conflict rather than visitor activity.

Beyond active instability, Tigray's governance profile is weak across all metrics (World Bank Rule of Law: 39/100; Political Stability: 34/100). Military checkpoints are routine, and supply chains for food, water, and communications can be disrupted. The combination of documented atrocities, ongoing military activity recorded as recently as January 2026, and explicit government travel advisories makes Axum incompatible with any tourism or non-essential visit.
